Young buyers are moving closer to family as Covid impacts lifestyle

More Australians are choosing to live closer to extended family as a result of Covid, with emotional support high on the list.

Young couple Kyra-Leigh Jeffcoat and Dave Senior are one of many young Queensland couples moving to big family-friendly communities keen to give their children room to grow and enjoy nearby green spaces.

They purchased in Hayfield at Ripley in July last year, in the same week as Kyra-Leigh’s brother and wife, Grant and Kirsty Jeffcoat.

They researched and viewed all the available housing developments in the Ripley area, and fell in love with Hayfield on their first visit.

“Driving down the road into Hayfield, we could tell it was different from the others. It instantly felt like home; welcoming and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Ripley Valley and the central Greenwood” says Dave.

“We went straight to the sales pavilion, met my partner’s brother and bought a block then and there.

“Kyra-Leigh and I are very family-orientated, but we hadn’t planned to live so close to her family.”

As neighbourhoods continue to bear the brunt of the pandemic, Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA) chairman Peter Koulizos says it will continue to bring many communities together.

“Covid and other major disasters help bring people together, especially neighbours,” he says.

“What you tend to get in master planned communities is a similar demographic – young families looking for a larger home with space. The coming together of people is likely to happen more in like-minded neighbourhoods.

“It’s not only the way we live that has brought neighbourhoods together, people are working more in their own neighbourhoods or hubs. Traditional office space vacancies are skyrocketing…”

He says: “Working from home was a lovely novelty, we are all social creatures so having the opportunity to drive five minutes to a neighbourhood hub and access printing, scanning and good coffee means socialisation.”

The Augustine Heights couple narrowed their search to the Ripley area because of its growth corridor, good transport links and the affordable options.
